I am bad, haha.

This morning I opened up fridge, and saw 2 boxes of J.CO(or Big Apple?) donuts, with name written. OK, this post may confusing.

  1. 2 boxes of donuts are belongs to 2 of my housemates, Su and Yeoh.
  2. Su, aka STW, wrote his name on the his box, and for fun, he wrote POC(piece of crap) on Yeoh's donut box.
  3. Later, I opened up fridge, and my hand also itchy, so I wrote 'sucks' after the name of STW.
  4. STW found out someone added some words to his box, so he suspected Yeoh saw the POC wording on his box, so Yeoh revenged.
  5. STW cancelled out the 'sucks' word, and told me the story.
  6. I laugh, and told him later Yeoh come back ask him, haha.

Su still don't know that is me who wrote SUCKS on his box, wait he see this post first la, haha!

Easy way to check hexadecimal arithmetic

Last few days I am busy for Machine Architecture Lab Test, busy busy.

What is Machine Architecture?
An art to teach you how to talk with the piece of silicon, damn!

During the study, I encounter a time wasting process, which is doing hexadecimal arithmetic operation. In human way, 5+5 = 10; in hexadecimal way, 5 + 5 = A !!!!!

So I Google for some program to do hex math, and I found Google Calculator is the most easiest to access and simplest, and the best part, fast and free!

What is Google Calculator?
Good, you using it everyday, just didn't notice. It's actually combined with Google search.

google math

See this magic.

google math 2
0x5 + 0x5 =? Press Enter.
(0x5 is actually 5h in our syllabus, means hexadecimal form.)

google math 3
  Answer is 0xA~~

It also can do other operation like subtraction, multiplication, and division. At least enough for my current syllabus.

How about conversion?
google math 4
No problem! With the syntax like HEX=?DECIMAL.

google math 6
The other way, no problem too. reverse the syntax.

google math 7
Multiple operations can be handled too.

Lab test was over, final paper is coming, hope this "exploration" can help my friends in their study. But careful, before use this tools, please make sure you know how to do manual arithmetic and conversion, there won't be any Google in exam hall to help you.

full Google Calculator instruction can see here, beside this simple maths, it also can use to convert physic quantity like speed; math function like modulus(%) and factorial(!).

How to disable the annoying Balloon Tips on Windows XP?

Em, I think most laptop users, especially those who use wireless access will really get frustrated when the Balloon Tips keep popping out to notify that the signal strength has changed from excellent to very good, or good to low, and so on. The balloon will pop up and down all the time and always pull your attention from your work and make you forgot what you thinking just now.

To disable the Balloon Tips:
Here is a tip to disable the balloon tips (tips kill tips, ha!)

*Before start this, you need to know what is registry, although this tips is easy, but any serious changes to registry will lead to fatal error.

1. Click Start, and click Run (or shortcut= Windows key + R), then type Regedit and click OK.

2. From the left panel, you see an expandable tree view. Browse to the following subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER\ADVANCED

3. Now, at the right panel, right click on any blank space, point to New, and add a DWORD Value, and rename it to EnableBalloonTips.

4. Double click on it, and change the Value data into 0, as show below:

enableballoontips

5. Click OK, quit registry editor, log off windows, and log back again. Now, all the balloon will gone, no more frustrating 'tips' to bother you when your signal strength changed, when you plug in a new pendrive, and so on. Enjoy ya!

I am not sure this tips work on Windows Vista, can someone try and tell me?

How to download video from YouTube?

Since February 2005, YouTube was founded by 3 PayPal employees, by using Adobe Flash technology. The first purpose to design that website is to publish friends' birthday video, who even know that after 2 years later, it's value can achieve USD1.65billion? Now it already belongs to Google.

To protect the licence of a video, YouTube only allow viewers to view the video live, and not allow the viewers to download it. This is for good sake, but some users don't like to view the video just in the Internet browser, they want to download it and view it with other players and show off in handphone, then, what should they do?

Method 1: Firefox
Firefox got a lot of extensions, one of it is Media Pirates: The Video Downloader. But first, you had to install Firefox, you can get it from the right side of my sidebar. For the extension, you can download it from here

media pirates

media pirates icon

After installed the extension(or plugin), go to www.youtube.com, and search for the video that you want to download. Notice the Media Pirates will become clickable. Click it and it will link you to MediaPirates.org page, click download it now, and save the file type as ".SLV", that's all. After download it, play it with FLV player. You can get the player at here.

Method 2:
Download it directly from web. Notice the URL box below?
youtube
Copy the URL, enter http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php, and paste the URL in the box, then click the download button on the right side of it, done. The FLV Player can be download here.

Enjoy.

Add FeedFlare under your post.

Yesterday, Sestri ask me how to add a "Digg This! • Save to del.icio.us • Email this • Submit To Netscape" links under every link, I don't know what this link call, so I call it FeedFlare.

I don't know how other's bloggers add their links under their post, but I use it through FeedBurner's service. Here is the easy method:

  • Go to www.FeedBurner.com, and insert your blog's URL into the space, and click Next. You aren't a podcaster, right?
  • Choose either Atom or RSS format(both are almost same). Those are subscription format, see my previous post about RSS.
  • Register, or sign in to your account to claim your feed, enter valid username and password and click "Activate Feed".
  • OK, now login(if you are not login yet) and click on your Feed Title.
  • To add FeedFlare, go to Optimize tab, and look for FeedFlare from left sidebar.
    feedflare
  • Thick whatever you like to display below you post.
    feedflare3
  • arrange the sequence by drag and drop.
    feedflare2
  • Then, click Save and get the HTML code.

Now, sign in to Blogger account, and follow the instruction from the pop up window that appear when you choose Blogger from the get HTML drop down menu.

Relax, it's easy. I think this tutorial is quite clear, if don't understand, leave a comment.

See? This is the Z-List.

What is Z-List? According to TienSoonism, Z-List is a way to increase PR(PageRank), by adding the link in blog post. PageRank is quite, no, I think it is very important for me, as currently my 1 and half month old blog is scoring "ZERO"! I had to increase it so my blog can be more flexible in linking ads and writing higher paid sponsored post by PayPerPost! You may ask: if I add others, their blogs' PR will increase, how about mine? Relax, in this game, one had to add the link from where you first see the list. Nice?

Here is the simple instruction, I just simply copy from Tiensoon's blog, here is it:

1) Create a new post on your blog.
2) Copy and paste the entire list of blog links below
3) Add any blogs that you want to include near the top of the list.
4) Include the blog where you first got the list from, on the list in your post.
5) Do not include your own blog links on the list in your post.
6) Make sure that all links are copied intact.
7) Publish the post.
8) Do not use nofollow attribute in your links please.

This is the blog that I add:

Wei Ying
TienSoon

This is the link I add from TienSoon's site:

No reason for not update your Friendster!

I believe that most of us having our own Friendster account, and it was constant update. Nowadays, Friendster is like a social communication tool, for finding friends, find love, to write blog, and to show off photos.

S**t, the photo size exceed 1MB!
This is the most common problem faced by Friendster users. When they went for a vacation, or just style a new hairstyle, they snap it with digital camera and transfer it into computer. However, most cameras in the market nowadays was equipped with at least 3.2 Mega Pixel, and producing an image that greater than 1MB in file size. People will feel lazy to resize the photo 1 by 1 with other photo processing application and they lost the chance to show off their cool photos to the world.

Here is the easy solutions:
No more hard way to resize pictures! Microsoft Powertoy had developed a new gadget, called Image Resizer (quite simple name). Image Resizer is like a plugin for Windows Explorer. Once you installed it, it will embed into your right-click menu, like this:

*download Powertoy Image Resizer here.

How to use?
Simple! Just select the photo or photos you want to resize, right click it, then choose Resize Pictures. Then, choose the photo dimension which you prefer(Note: the smaller the dimension, the smaller the file size, however, resize from very large dimension image into very small dimension image will squeeze the image quality too). There are 4 default dimensions for you to choose: Small (640x480), Medium(800x600), Large(1024x768) and Handheld PC(240x320). Inside Advanced Button, you can customize your image dimension. If you afraid that the image you resized will damage, you can uncheck the "Resize the original pictures(don't create copies)" box. The box is uncheck in default.

Why this Resizer is the best?
Ask yourself: Every time you resized an image, will the quality of that image preserve when the file size reduced? no. But this seems not happen in this Powertoy Image Resizer. Try it yourself, resize a picture with the same dimension as the original picture. Then zoom to any level to make comparison. it's the same! But, the file size already reduced 60%++. Until now, I still don't know what technology that Powertoy Image Resizer using, simply reduce the file size without reduce the image quality.

Try it, it's free! No more excuse of why you don't update your Friendster!

Add a Previous Post Widget to your Sidebar

Maybe New Blogger is still very new, I can't easily find tutorials or codes to modify the template. Recently, I saw a site with a Previous Post in the sidebar. I search on Blogger Help, but I can just receive tutorials for Old Blogger. After some searching works, I found a tutorial from Beautiful Beta to add a Recent Post Widget into my blog. See my sidebar for example.

The tutorial is easy, visit this page, click the "Add recent post to blog" button, then choose the number of post you want to display and your blog's URL, then click "Customize" followed by "Add Widget to My Blog", that's all.

Attn: This method or tutorial only works with New Blogger, for Old Blogger, copy the code below:

<BloggerPreviousItems>
<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>">
<$BlogPreviousItemTitle$>
</a><br />
</BloggerPreviousItems>

and paste it under <!-- Sidebar --><div id="sidebar">, done!

For more tutorial, please visit Beautiful Beta.

Gmail's shortcut key

"Ei, why no function one? Hey! This is not Gmail!"

Since I know about Gmail's shortcut key, I always use shortcut key to manage my Gmail account. Sometimes, when I visiting Friendster and other websites, I press 'u', and still hope it will bring me back to the main page....

How shortcut keys work?
To use shortcut keys, you need to enable shortcut key first. To do so, go to settings, under general tab, you will see 'keyboard shortcuts', turn it on. Basic key is:

u -- go back (I love this function!)
o -- open a mail
c -- compose a mail
r -- reply

and many others!! Learn more.

Generate your own E-MAIL Signature

Oh no! 1000+ spam again?!

How they got my mail?
Actually, those spammer got my e-mail when I display my e-mail publicly on other website, like forum. An e-mail scanner will scan through the websites and send spam to me.

How to fight this problem?
One effective way to prevent other spammer to get your e-mail is to display your e-mail in image form, because the scanner can only read text form, for example:

image

How to generate this cool signature?
I always thought someone custom made it, but many website use the same signature style, then I start to realize that there must be a generator. Try this. This generator can generate e-mail for any other service provider, like MSN, Hotmail, etc.

Other way to bypass the e-mail scanner is to write your e-mail in this form:

v.handed[a]gmail[dot]com

try it.

ASCII Football match

"Oh no! Overtime again! My favorite country is in play! Look like I gonna miss it again..."
~overtimed worker

Last year, FIFA World Cup 2006 was held at Germany, and that game nearly burn the entire planet. I quite agree with the Coca-Cola Advertisement that has a theme "Bring people together". But in reality, this always blocked by your big bosses and assignments. Luckily, during the World Cup Season, we still can watch it  LIVE through ASCII WorldCup Match! Here is the way:

  1. Open up your command prompt by pressing 'Windows+R', type cmd, and press 'Enter'.
  2. Type in 'telnet ascii-wm.net 2006', and press 'Enter'.
  3. Enjoy your live broadcast!

For a better image, use PUTTY:

  1. From the protocols, choose Telnet.
  2. Change the port into 2006.
  3. Type 'ascii-wn.net' in the Host Name.
  4. Click 'Open' and enjoy.

The Real and Ascii

It's black and white, I know, but rather than nothing, isn't it? The bandwidth is not much as the real and full color one, so it won't cause serious traffic to your company's network.

Now the football match was over, but you still can try this ridiculous way to watch random match. Hope next FIFA World Cup, you office worker still can watch it in ASCII, but carefully, don't let your boss know about it.

Tips: To get a clearer view of the whole match, sit far from the monitor.

Without RSS, you're outdated!!!

"What is the orange icon?"
"It's cool, but I don't know about it."
"Maybe is a link for slow Internet connection."
...........

Look like many people still don't know the function of RSS. RSS stand for Really Simple Syndication, the user need a Feed Reader, or we call it aggregator, to read RSS Feeds. It helps to save time to load webpages, and you will only be notified when the site that you subscribed updated. For a serious blog reader and time-not-enough-men, this will greatly save up a lot of time.

To simplify it, it works like subscribe to newspaper. When you click on the Orange Button, you are subscribing newsletter from my site, and when my site was updated, I will send my post to your feed reader, and you don't need to visit my site every time to see whether I updated or not.

rss-feed-icon

Why it's not that popular?
I know it is good, and I am using it, but when I ask other people, they will just simply say: "I don't know", "Is it same like CSS?(they know CSS from Friendster)". A survey to the people in China, only 2% use RSS Feeds. What a small percentage for a largest population in the world. The small orange icon appear in every blogs and news, but not much people put attention to it, the reason is maybe no clear instruction to teach people how to use it. When they click on the subscription button, it link them to a page without colorful background, nice background music and fancy font or title. Most people will related that RSS is for low speed connection that don't need much download.

How to use RSS?
Actually the simple way to use RSS is just to copy the URL or address of the 'boring page', and paste it to your reader to subscribe it. IE7 has a build in Feed Reader (see the orange icon), while Firefox 2.0.0.1 come with Live Bookmark.

IE7
In IE7, just click on the Orange icon, then click on the 'Subscribe to this feed' link in the yellow box at the top of the page, next time, just click Favorite button in IE7, and click Feeds tab to choose the feeds that you want to read.

Mozilla Firefox
In Firefox, click on the Orange icon, too, then click the 'Subscribe Now' button in the yellow box at the top of the page, and choose where to save the feeds. To read the feeds, click on bookmark and then the Feeds that you subscribed. Easy?

Other Feed Reader
There are so many Feed readers in the market, all the readers have the ability to read both XML and Atom Feed. (RSS is a type of XML format, while Atom feed is another feed format). In standard Feed Reader, just copy the link of the feed, and paste it into the readers. A freeware feed application, Feedreader, is a good application to read your feed.

This small Orange Icon rocks.
